T-Mobile's device unlock policy is one of the most straightforward among US carriers. Most T-Mobile phones unlock automatically after 40 days of active service — but there are conditions. Here's how to check your IMEI unlock status and request an unlock if needed.

T-Mobile Unlock Eligibility Requirements (2026)

  • Device must have been active on T-Mobile for at least 40 days (reduced from previous 365-day requirement)
  • The account must be in good standing
  • Device installment plan (EIP) must be fully paid off
  • Device must not be reported as lost or stolen
  • Postpaid and prepaid accounts both qualify (prepaid requires $100 or more recharges, or 12 months of service)

T-Mobile Auto-Unlock — Does It Actually Happen Automatically?

T-Mobile's policy states that eligible devices are unlocked automatically after 40 days. In practice, this means the unlock is applied to T-Mobile's systems automatically — but some devices (especially Android) may need a manual trigger to detect the change. iPhones typically pick it up automatically via Apple's activation servers within 24–48 hours of becoming eligible.

How to Check T-Mobile IMEI Unlock Status

  1. Run an IMEI check at imeicheckpro.com — the carrier check shows current T-Mobile lock status.
  2. In the T-Mobile app: Account → Line Details → Device → "Request Device Unlock" (if button appears, device needs manual request; if greyed out or absent, device may already be unlocked or ineligible).
  3. Insert a SIM from a different carrier. If the phone asks for a network unlock code, it is still locked. If it activates normally, it is unlocked.

How to Request T-Mobile Unlock Manually

Via the T-Mobile app:

  1. Open T-Mobile app → Account → Line Details
  2. Select the device → Device Unlock
  3. Follow the prompts. Eligible devices unlock immediately or within 24 hours.

Via customer service: Call 1-877-746-0909 with your IMEI and account details.

For international travel before 40 days: T-Mobile will process an international unlock for travel purposes even if the 40-day requirement isn't met — contact customer service with travel documentation.

T-Mobile DIGITS and Multi-Line Considerations

If you use T-Mobile DIGITS (multiple numbers on one device), device unlock applies to the physical device, not individual lines. All lines associated with the device must have cleared their installment plans before unlock eligibility applies.

T-Mobile Prepaid Unlock Requirements

  • Device used on T-Mobile prepaid for at least 12 months, OR
  • At least $100 in refills added since the device was first used on T-Mobile
