IMEI vs Serial Number: Key Differences
Both IMEI and serial numbers uniquely identify a smartphone, but they serve different purposes and are used differently in device verification. Understanding which to use — and when — makes IMEI checking more effective.
IMEI Number
- Format — 15 digits, standardized globally by GSMA
- Purpose — Identifies the device to mobile networks; used for blacklisting and carrier lock tracking
- Scope — Global. Recognized by carriers worldwide.
- Found via —
*#06#, Settings, SIM tray, box - Used for — IMEI checks: blacklist, carrier lock, TAC model lookup
Serial Number
- Format — Alphanumeric, manufacturer-specific (e.g., Apple uses 12-character serial numbers)
- Purpose — Identifies the specific unit for manufacturer warranty, repairs, and service records
- Scope — Manufacturer-specific. Apple serial numbers only work with Apple systems.
- Found via — Settings → About, box, device back (some models)
- Used for — Warranty checks, Apple GSX, service history
When to Use IMEI vs Serial Number
- Blacklist check — Always use IMEI
- Carrier lock check — Always use IMEI
- Apple warranty check — Use serial number at checkcoverage.apple.com, or IMEI via IMEI Check Pro Apple GSX report
- Model verification — Either works; IMEI is more standardized
