IMEI Not Found in Database — What It Means

5 min readUpdated 6/1/2025

What Does "IMEI Not Found" Mean?

If an IMEI check returns "not found," "invalid IMEI," or "TAC not recognized," this is a significant red flag that requires immediate investigation before any purchase.

Reasons an IMEI May Not Be Found

  • Fake or clone device — The most common reason. The TAC doesn't exist in the GSMA database because the device isn't a genuine product from a registered manufacturer.
  • New device with unregistered TAC — Very new models may not yet be in all databases. Rare, and unlikely if the IMEI check service queries GSMA directly.
  • Altered or cloned IMEI — A legitimate IMEI copied from another device. The original IMEI may check fine, but the device using it is fraudulent.
  • Typo in the IMEI — Double-check you've entered all 15 digits correctly. Dial *#06# again to confirm.

What to Do If IMEI Is Not Found

  1. Recheck the IMEI — dial *#06# again and compare with Settings → About
  2. If both sources show the same IMEI and it's not found, the device is almost certainly fake or has an altered IMEI
  3. Do not purchase the device
  4. Report to the platform where the device is listed (eBay, Facebook Marketplace, etc.)

Distinguishing Fake IMEIs

Run the IMEI through IMEI Check Pro. Legitimate devices from Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, and all other major manufacturers will return a valid TAC with device model information. If nothing returns, the device cannot be verified as genuine.
