IMEI Check USA — Free Phone Verification for US Buyers

6 min readUpdated 6/1/2025

IMEI Check for the United States

The US second-hand smartphone market is worth over $20 billion annually. Before buying any used phone in the US — from eBay, Swappa, Facebook Marketplace, or a local seller — running an IMEI check is essential to avoid blacklisted, carrier-locked, or fraudulent devices.

US-Specific IMEI Checks That Matter

  • US Carrier Blacklist (CTIA) — US carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint) report lost/stolen phones to the CTIA database. A US-blacklisted phone cannot be activated on any major US carrier.
  • Carrier Lock — US carriers lock phones for 30–180 days after purchase. An IMEI check reveals which carrier the phone is locked to.
  • GSM vs CDMA — Older Verizon and Sprint phones used CDMA. Verify network compatibility via IMEI before buying.
  • iCloud Activation Lock — Critical for iPhones. A locked iPhone is worthless without the previous owner's Apple ID.

Major US Carriers and Lock Policies

  • AT&T — Unlock eligible after 60 days for postpaid, immediately for prepaid if fully paid
  • T-Mobile — 40 days for postpaid, 365 days for prepaid
  • Verizon — Most devices are unlocked out of the box since 2019
  • Cricket / Metro / Boost — MVNO devices may have longer lock periods

Safe Buying Platforms in the US

Swappa, Back Market, and Apple Certified Refurbished are generally safer than Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. However, even certified-reseller devices should be verified via IMEI before accepting.
