IMEI Check Turkey: BTK Registration, Tax & How to Register a Foreign Phone
IMEI Check and Registration in Turkey (Türkiye)
Turkey has one of the world's most restrictive IMEI registration systems. Every phone brought into Turkey must be officially registered with the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (Bilgi Teknolojileri ve İletişim Kurumu — BTK) within 120 days, or it will be blocked from Turkish networks. Here's exactly what this means and how to handle it.
Turkey's 120-Day IMEI Registration Rule
When you bring a phone into Turkey and insert a Turkish SIM card, it starts a 120-day clock. If the phone is not officially registered with BTK within those 120 days, it is blocked from all Turkish carrier networks (Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey, Türk Telekom).
This rule is enforced even for tourists staying long-term, expats, and residents who purchase phones abroad.
How to Check IMEI Status in Turkey
- Go to btk.gov.tr → IMEI sorgu (IMEI query)
- Alternatively, dial *#06# to get your IMEI, then SMS to BTK's verification number
- Your carrier (Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey, Türk Telekom) can also check registration status
How to Register a Foreign Phone in Turkey
Official registration options:
- Via e-Government (e-Devlet): Log into turkiye.gov.tr → search "IMEI kayıt" → register with your Turkish Tax ID (Vergi Kimlik Numarası) or e-Devlet PIN
- At a notary (noter): With your passport and IMEI — the notary can process the registration
- At Customs (Gümrük): Phones brought through Turkish Customs can be registered at the time of entry
The registration fee is a one-time payment tied to the phone's value — typically several hundred Turkish lira. The exact amount changes with exchange rates and regulations.
Tourist Exception
Tourists visiting Turkey for 90 days or less may not need to register their phone formally — the 120-day window effectively covers a tourist visit. However, if you plan to stay longer or return frequently with the same phone, registration is strongly recommended.
Buying Used Phones in Turkey
When buying a used phone in Turkey, verify:
- IMEI is registered with BTK (check via btk.gov.tr or carrier)
- Brand and model via imeicheckpro.com/free-check
- For iPhones: iCloud Activation Lock status
- Whether the seller has the registration receipt (Gümrük makbuzu) for imported phones
