IMEI Check Before Buying on eBay, Amazon, or Facebook Marketplace
6 min readUpdated 6/1/2025
IMEI Check for Marketplace Purchases
eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Amazon (third-party sellers), Craigslist, and similar platforms carry significant risk of stolen, carrier-locked, or misrepresented phones. An IMEI check before purchase is your best protection.
Platform-Specific Risks
- eBay — High volume of stolen phones; sellers can be based anywhere; buyer protection exists but takes time to resolve
- Facebook Marketplace — Cash transactions, no buyer protection, high risk of stolen devices
- Amazon Marketplace (third-party) — "Like New" listings may include blacklisted devices; Amazon's protection policy covers this but requires proof
- Craigslist / Gumtree — Cash-only platform, no buyer protection, highest risk
How to IMEI Check a Marketplace Phone Before Buying
- Before meeting or paying — Ask the seller for the IMEI. Legitimate sellers list IMEI in the description or provide it on request.
- Free check — Verify model matches listing description at IMEI Check Pro free
- Premium check — Verify blacklist, iCloud Lock, and carrier lock via premium report before transferring payment
What To Do If the Seller Won't Share IMEI
A legitimate seller has no reason to refuse sharing the IMEI. If they refuse, decline the purchase. If you're meeting in person, you can dial *#06# on the device yourself before any payment.
Chargeback Protection
Always pay with a credit card or PayPal Goods & Services. If the device turns out to be blacklisted after purchase, you have grounds for a chargeback — which requires the IMEI check report as evidence. The IMEI Check Pro premium report serves as this documentation.
