IMEI Check Canada — Phone Verification for Canadian Buyers

5 min readUpdated 6/1/2025

IMEI Check for Canada

Canada's smartphone resale market operates through Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace, and Swappa Canada. Canadian buyers face risks from carrier-locked devices (Rogers, Bell, Telus lock phones for months) and US-market phones with incompatible AWS-3 bands.

Canadian Carrier Lock Rules (CRTC Regulations)

The CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) mandated that carriers must unlock phones for free on request since 2017. However, many older devices sold used are still locked. Always verify:

  • Rogers/Fido — Unlock at any time for free (CRTC mandated)
  • Bell/Virgin — Same CRTC rules apply
  • Telus/Koodo — Free unlock on request

Canadian vs US Market Phones

Many phones sold in Canada are US carrier variants (AT&T, Verizon). While they often work on Canadian networks, they may lack some Canadian AWS bands. An IMEI check identifies the exact regional model to avoid compatibility issues.

Run a free IMEI check to verify the model, then use the premium report for carrier lock and blacklist status.
