IMEI Check Before International Travel
Travelling internationally with a carrier-locked phone means you can't use a local SIM, leaving you paying expensive roaming charges. Run an IMEI check before your trip to confirm your phone is unlocked and globally compatible.
What to Check Before Travelling
- Carrier lock status — If locked, request an unlock from your carrier before departure. Most carriers unlock for free once the contract is fulfilled.
- Network band compatibility — Different countries use different LTE bands. An IMEI check identifies your device's regional variant and supported bands.
- IMEI registration requirements — Some countries (Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia) require foreign phones to be registered for use on local networks.
Countries with IMEI Registration for Visitors
- Pakistan — 60-day grace period for tourist IMEI registration via DIRBS
- Nigeria — NCC may block unregistered IMEIs on local networks
- Ethiopia — ETA requires tourist phone registration
- Tanzania — TCRA requires IMEI registration for extended stays
How to Unlock Before Travel
- Run an IMEI carrier lock check to confirm lock status
- Contact your carrier 2–4 weeks before travel (processing can take up to 10 days)
- Confirm unlock by inserting a foreign SIM after the carrier processes the request
