IMEI Check Before International Travel

Travelling internationally with a carrier-locked phone means you can't use a local SIM, leaving you paying expensive roaming charges. Run an IMEI check before your trip to confirm your phone is unlocked and globally compatible.

What to Check Before Travelling

  • Carrier lock status — If locked, request an unlock from your carrier before departure. Most carriers unlock for free once the contract is fulfilled.
  • Network band compatibility — Different countries use different LTE bands. An IMEI check identifies your device's regional variant and supported bands.
  • IMEI registration requirements — Some countries (Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia) require foreign phones to be registered for use on local networks.

Countries with IMEI Registration for Visitors

  • Pakistan — 60-day grace period for tourist IMEI registration via DIRBS
  • Nigeria — NCC may block unregistered IMEIs on local networks
  • Ethiopia — ETA requires tourist phone registration
  • Tanzania — TCRA requires IMEI registration for extended stays

How to Unlock Before Travel

  1. Run an IMEI carrier lock check to confirm lock status
  2. Contact your carrier 2–4 weeks before travel (processing can take up to 10 days)
  3. Confirm unlock by inserting a foreign SIM after the carrier processes the request
