How to Detect a Fake iPhone Using IMEI

6 min readUpdated 6/1/2025

Detecting a Fake iPhone with an IMEI Check

The global market for counterfeit iPhones is massive. From Chinese-made replicas that look nearly identical to real iPhones to "Frankenstein" phones built from mixed parts — IMEI verification is the most reliable way to confirm authenticity.

How Fake iPhones Are Sold

  • Visual replicas — Android-based phones running a fake iOS skin. Looks like an iPhone, runs Android.
  • Fake IMEI — Clone devices with invalid or recycled IMEIs from real iPhones
  • Parts swapped — Real iPhone housing with non-Apple internals
  • Unofficial refurbs — Non-Apple screen and battery replacements that affect Face ID / Touch ID

IMEI Check to Detect Fake iPhones

  1. Dial *#06# on the suspected iPhone
  2. Enter the IMEI at IMEI Check Pro free
  3. If the IMEI returns "invalid TAC" or a non-Apple brand — it's fake
  4. If the IMEI shows as a real iPhone model, use the Apple GSX premium report to verify iCloud, warranty, and activation records

Physical Signs of a Fake iPhone

  • Settings → General → About shows a non-iOS version (e.g., Android or a modified iOS that won't update via OTA)
  • App Store link opens a third-party app store
  • Siri doesn't respond or responds differently
  • FaceTime or iMessage can't be activated
  • The Apple logo on the back is slightly off in size or finish

Apple's Serial Number Verification

After running an IMEI check, also verify the serial number at checkcoverage.apple.com. Real iPhones will return warranty status. Fake iPhones will return "not a valid serial number."
