iCloud Activation Lock Check by IMEI
iCloud Activation Lock is Apple's anti-theft system. An iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch with Activation Lock enabled cannot be set up without the previous owner's Apple ID and password — even after a factory reset. It is the single most important check before buying any used Apple device.
What Is iCloud Activation Lock?
When "Find My" is enabled on an Apple device, iCloud Activation Lock is automatically activated. If the device is reset without first signing out of iCloud, the next person to set it up will see the "Activation Lock" screen — making the device completely unusable.
How to Check iCloud Lock Status
- By IMEI — The most reliable method. Use IMEI Check Pro's premium report to query Apple's databases and return iCloud Lock status: Clean or Locked.
- On the device — Turn on the iPhone. If it shows "Activate iPhone" without asking for a passcode, it may be locked. Ask the seller to enter their Apple ID to verify.
- iCloud.com — Ask the seller to log into icloud.com/find and show the device listed (proves they own the Apple ID linked to it).
iCloud Lock Status Values
- Clean (Off) — No Apple ID linked. Safe to buy. Device can be set up normally.
- Locked (On) — An Apple ID is linked. The previous owner must remove it before you can use the device.
- Find My: On — Owner's account is active. Ask seller to turn off Find My in Settings → [Name] → Find My → iPhone → Off
Red Flags
- Seller refuses to turn off Find My before payment
- IMEI check shows iCloud Locked but seller says "just enter your own Apple ID"
- Price is far below market — often because iCloud lock makes the device useless
Never buy an iCloud-locked iPhone without the original owner present to remove the lock. Check iCloud status via IMEI Check Pro premium before any purchase.
