How to Check If a Phone Is Carrier Locked by IMEI

Carrier Lock Check by IMEI

A carrier-locked phone only works with SIM cards from the carrier it is locked to. Buying a locked phone means you cannot switch carriers — and may face roaming restrictions abroad. An IMEI check reveals carrier lock status before you commit to a purchase.

What Is Carrier Lock?

When you buy a phone through a carrier on a payment plan or subsidized contract, the carrier locks it so you can only use their SIM. Once the contract or payment plan is completed, you can request an unlock. Used phones are frequently sold while still locked.

How to Check Carrier Lock by IMEI

  1. Get the IMEI via *#06#
  2. Use IMEI Check Pro's premium report — it returns the SIM lock status: Unlocked, Locked (with carrier name), or Unknown
  3. Alternatively, insert a different carrier's SIM and attempt to make a call — if it says "SIM Not Supported," the phone is locked

How to Unlock a Carrier-Locked Phone

  • Contact the original carrier with the IMEI and account details
  • Most carriers unlock for free once the contract/payment is complete
  • US CRTC mandates free unlocking; EU carriers are required to offer unlocking
  • Third-party unlock services exist but vary in reliability and legality

Always verify carrier lock status via free IMEI check (for model) and premium report (for SIM lock) before buying a used phone.
