GSMA Device Check: What It Is and Why It Matters
5 min readUpdated 6/1/2025
What Is GSMA Device Check?
The GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association) operates the global framework that makes IMEI checking possible. Understanding GSMA's role helps explain why IMEI checks are authoritative and globally reliable.
GSMA's IMEI Responsibilities
- TAC Database — Maintains the global Type Allocation Code database (accessed when you run a free IMEI check)
- CEIR — Operates the Central Equipment Identity Register (global blacklist)
- IMEI allocation — Allocates IMEI ranges to manufacturers; ensures uniqueness
- Standards setting — Defines IMEI format specifications and validation rules
GSMA CEIR Coverage
The GSMA CEIR blacklist is connected to carriers in over 100 countries. When IMEI Check Pro queries the GSMA blacklist, it checks against this global database. An IMEI that is clean in the GSMA database has not been reported stolen to any connected carrier globally.
How IMEI Check Pro Connects to GSMA
IMEI Check Pro queries GSMA's TAC database for device identification and checks GSMA's CEIR for blacklist status (available in the premium report). This is the same underlying data used by carriers and law enforcement agencies worldwide.
