Bought a Stolen Phone: Your Step-by-Step Guide
If you've discovered — via an IMEI check or carrier block — that your phone is stolen, here is exactly what to do. Acting quickly gives you the best chance of a refund and protects you legally.
Immediate Steps
- Stop using the device — Continuing to use a known stolen device could complicate your legal position in some jurisdictions
- Document everything — Screenshot the IMEI check result, preserve all communication with the seller, save receipts and payment records
- Run a full IMEI report — Get the premium IMEI Check Pro report documenting the blacklist status for use in disputes
Recovering Your Money
- Contact the seller first — Explain the situation calmly and request a refund. Many sellers will comply when faced with an IMEI check report.
- Escalate to the platform — eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Gumtree all have buyer protection processes. File a dispute with your IMEI check report as evidence.
- Chargeback your card — If you paid by credit card, call your card issuer and file a chargeback claim. An IMEI check report showing a stolen device constitutes "item not as described."
- PayPal Buyer Protection — Open a dispute under "Significantly Not as Described" if you paid via PayPal Goods & Services.
Legal Obligations
- In most countries, once you know you possess stolen property, you must surrender it to police or return it to the rightful owner
- File a police report to document that you purchased the phone in good faith
- The police report also supports your financial dispute claims
Preventing This in Future
Always run a complete IMEI check before paying for any used phone. A premium IMEI report costs a fraction of what you stand to lose on a stolen device.
